New Stock Market Timings August 3 2026: Investor Guide

Updated At: August 4th 2026

Indian stock markets changed on August 3, 2026, with the launch of the Closing Auction Session (CAS) and a 10-minute extension of equity derivatives trading hours. The change was introduced by a SEBI circular and implemented by NSE, BSE, and MSEI. For most long-term investors, the change is small and technical. For active traders and anyone who places orders near market close, the change is more immediate and worth understanding clearly.

Here is what changed, what stayed the same, and what it means for you as a retail investor.

What Is the Closing Auction Session?

The Closing Auction Session is a new way to determine the official closing price of certain stocks. Before August 3, 2026, the closing price was calculated as the Volume Weighted Average Price (VWAP) of trades in the last 30 minutes of continuous trading. From August 3 onwards, for eligible stocks, the exchange collects buy and sell orders during a defined auction window and matches them at a single price, the one that maximises the number of shares traded.

The reason for the change is straightforward. Large orders placed in the final minutes of continuous trading could sometimes swing the closing price unfairly, which affected everything from index calculations to mutual fund NAVs to derivatives settlement. CAS reduces that risk by pooling orders and matching them at a common price. This is how major global exchanges like NYSE, NASDAQ, and LSE handle their closing prices, and India has now aligned with that standard.

CAS applies in Phase 1 only to Category I stocks, which are stocks with active futures and options (F&O) contracts on both NSE and BSE. All other listed stocks (Category II) continue to trade normally until 3:30 PM with the old VWAP-based closing method. A second phase covering the Pre-Open Auction Session follows on September 7, 2026.

New Stock Market Timings from August 3, 2026

The new stock market timings for August 2026 differ by segment. The opening time (9:15 AM) is unchanged for everyone. The closing side is where the changes are.

Three things to remember: F&O-eligible stocks stop continuous trading at 3:15 PM (they then enter CAS). Non-F&O stocks continue as before to 3:30 PM. F&O trading now runs 10 minutes longer until 3:40 PM.

How the Closing Auction Session Works?

The 20-minute CAS window (3:15 PM to 3:35 PM) runs in four stages that break down as follows.

  • 3:15 PM to 3:20 PM: Regular trading in CAS-eligible stocks stops. The exchange calculates a reference price based on trades between 3:00 PM and 3:15 PM. Fresh orders cannot be placed

  • 3:20 PM to 3:25 PM: Investors can place both market and limit orders. These are collected, not matched immediately

  • 3:25 PM to 3:30 PM: Only limit orders can be placed. Market orders from the earlier stage cannot be modified or cancelled. The window closes at a random moment between 3:28 PM and 3:30 PM to prevent last-second gaming

  • 3:30 PM to 3:35 PM: The exchange matches all eligible orders and determines the official closing price. The final price is the one at which the maximum quantity can be traded

Certain orders do not carry into CAS. Stop-loss orders, iceberg orders, and orders priced outside a 3% band around the reference price are cancelled at 3:15 PM. If you use stop-loss orders regularly, this is worth noting.

What Changes for Retail Investors?

For most long-term investors placing orders during regular market hours, nothing changes. You buy or sell during the day, orders execute normally, and the market opens the next morning at 9:15 AM as before. The changes are concentrated in three specific situations.

If you trade intraday: The auto-square-off window for intraday positions in CAS-eligible stocks moves 10 to 15 minutes earlier. Most brokers now square off open positions from around 3:10 PM instead of the earlier 3:20 PM. Check your broker's specific square-off timing before market close.

If you place orders near market close: For CAS-eligible stocks, an order placed after 3:15 PM enters the auction rather than executing immediately. The final execution price may differ from the last traded price at 3:15 PM. Market orders during CAS are not guaranteed to execute at the earlier last-traded price, so limit orders offer more control.

If you trade F&O: You now have 10 additional minutes until 3:40 PM to adjust positions after the underlying stock's closing price is determined through CAS. This is generally welcomed by derivatives traders, since it gives more time to hedge or unwind based on the actual closing print.

If you invest through mutual funds: The change is quieter. NAV computation for schemes holding F&O-eligible stocks now uses CAS-derived closing prices. This should not change your NAV materially day to day. If anything, index funds and ETFs should see slightly reduced tracking error over time, since they can now execute closer to the official closing price. Mutual fund cut-off times for same-day NAV are unchanged: 3:00 PM for equity, hybrid, and most debt schemes, and 1:30 PM for liquid and overnight funds. For equity schemes, the same-day rule also requires that funds be received in the AMC or RTA account by the cut-off, not just the transaction initiated.

What Does Not Change

Several important things stay the same, and it is worth noting them clearly.

  • Market opening time (9:15 AM) is unchanged

  • Non-F&O stocks trade normally till 3:30 PM with no auction

  • Commodity and currency markets are unaffected

  • Mutual fund cut-off times for same-day NAV are unchanged (3:00 PM for equity, hybrid, and most debt; 1:30 PM for liquid and overnight funds).

  • T+1 settlement continues as before

  • Long-term investment logic is not affected

For most retail investors, the takeaway is simple: continue investing as you were, and if you place trades or orders near market close, be aware of the new segment-specific timings.

Conclusion

The new stock market timings in August 2026 introduce a structural improvement to how India's most-traded stocks close each day. The Closing Auction Session brings India in line with major global markets and reduces the risk of end-of-day price manipulation. For long-term investors, the change is largely invisible. For active traders and those placing orders near market close, the new segment timings need to be internalised. Continue investing sensibly, check your broker's revised square-off windows if you trade intraday, and stay informed about market changes that affect your portfolio.

FAQs

The market opens as usual at 9:15 AM. For F&O-eligible stocks, continuous trading ends at 3:15 PM and the Closing Auction Session runs from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM. Non-F&O stocks continue trading until 3:30 PM. Equity futures and options now trade until 3:40 PM, 10 minutes longer than before. The cash market post-close session shifts to 3:50 PM to 4:00 PM.

The Closing Auction Session is a new price-discovery mechanism introduced by SEBI to determine the official closing price of F&O-eligible stocks. Instead of using the average price of trades in the last 30 minutes, the exchange collects buy and sell orders during a defined auction window from 3:15 PM to 3:35 PM and matches them at a single price where maximum shares can be executed.

No, CAS applies only to Category I stocks in Phase 1, which are stocks with active futures and options contracts on both NSE and BSE. All other listed stocks (Category II) continue trading normally until 3:30 PM with the earlier volume-weighted average price method. SEBI has indicated a possible later phase to bring in Category II stocks, but no date has been announced.

Intraday traders in CAS-eligible stocks need to close positions earlier than before. Most brokers have moved their auto-square-off window for these stocks from around 3:20 PM to around 3:10 PM, so open positions in F&O-eligible stocks may be closed 10 to 15 minutes earlier than under the old schedule. Check your specific broker's revised square-off timing before you next trade intraday.

For most mutual fund investors, no. Same-day NAV cut-off times remain unchanged at 3:00 PM for equity, hybrid, and most debt schemes and 1:30 PM for liquid and overnight funds. The NAV of schemes holding F&O-eligible stocks is now computed using CAS-derived closing prices, but this does not change NAV materially. Index funds and ETFs may see slightly improved tracking accuracy over time due to the more efficient closing-price mechanism.
